چکیده

We establish new results and introduce new methods in the theory of measurable orbit equivalence, using bounded cohomology of group representations. Our rigidity statements hold for a wide (uncountable) class of groups arising from negative curvature geometry. Amongst our applications are (a) measurable Mostow-type rigidity theorems for products of negatively curved groups; (b) prime factorization results for measure equivalence; (c) superrigidity for orbit equivalence; (d) the first examples of continua of type II1 equivalence relations with trivial outer automorphism group that are mutually not stably isomorphic.

An invitation to bounded cohomology

A selection of aspects of the theory of bounded cohomology is presented. The emphasis is on questions motivating the use of that theory as well as on some concrete issues suggested by its study. Specific topics include rigidity, bounds on characteristic classes, quasification, orbit equivalence, amenability. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000). Primary 55N; Secondary 20F.

Localized cohomology and some applications of Popa’s cocycle super-rigidity theorem

We prove that orbit equivalence of measure preserving ergodic a.e. free actions of a countable group with the relative property (T) is a complete analytic equivalence relation.

Real Coboundaries for Minimal Cantor Systems

In this paper we investigate the role of real-valued coboundaries for classifying of minimal homeomorphisms of the Cantor set. This work follows the work of Giordano, Putnam, and Skau who showed that one can use integer-valued coboundaries to characterize minimal homeomorphisms up to strong orbit equivalence. First, we prove a rigidity result. We show that there is an orbit equivalence between ...

C*-algebraic Characterization of Bounded Orbit Injection Equivalence for Minimal Free Cantor Systems

Bounded orbit injection equivalence is an equivalence relation defined on minimal free Cantor systems which is a candidate to generalize flip Kakutani equivalence to actions of the Abelian free groups on more than one generator. This paper characterizes bounded orbit injection equivalence in terms of a mild strengthening of Rieffel-Morita equivalence of the associated C*-crossed-product algebra...

Bounded Cohomology, Cross Ratios and Cocycles

We use cross ratios to describe second real continuous bounded cohomology for locally compact σ-compact topological groups. We also investigate the second continuous bounded cohomology group of a closed subgroup of the isometry group Iso(X) of a proper hyperbolic geodesic metric space X and derive some rigidity results for Iso(X)-valued cocycles.
